I was a weird kid. Partly because I was the kid whose favourite food was fruit. Not chocolate, not ice cream, not even peanut butter or cheese sticks. Plain old, disgustingly healthy fruit.
I have never quite grown out of that and I would say that fruit probably is still my favourite food. Not my favourite meal, perhaps but my favourite type of food. I mean, if I had to give up either chocolate or fruit for the rest of my life (or even for a year), then the Cadbury’s would definitely be going in the bin.
Now, I’m not sure that you can really call this a recipe but spring set in, in London today and I just made myself my first amazing fruit salad of the warmer months. Although basic, it was so tasty, I thought I’d share.
Citrus Fruit Salad
Serves 4
I Used
1 medium green apple
1 medium red apple
1 small orange
1 medium banana
2 medium mandarins
2 small kiwi fruit
1 handful raspberries
I diced or segmented all the fruit, chucked it all in a bowl, mixed it all up then covered it all in the juice of half a lemon and half a lime. Partly to reduce browning and partly because it’s delicious.
That’s it! Kitchen genius, right?
As I had this for dessert, a lot of people would add honey or sugar but as fruit is full of natural sugars, I think it’s plenty sweet on it’s own. Of course, you could serve this over ice cream, in yoghurt or custard etc. But I seriously prefer it on it’s own. Just a bowl of chopped up fruit. I was that weird kid, after all…
What an easy, delightful child you were 🙂
I’m always interested in slightly oddball childhood likes. My favourite food when I was a kid was rice. A bowl of rice with a little soy sauce on top. Heaven.
When we have a glut of fruit that must be eaten, I turn to Collective Dairy’s russian fudge yoghurt to dollop on top of chopped fruit. It’s sinfully decadent.
Haha, I’m sure my mum would disagree with that! 😉
Sounds like you preferred the simple things too! Kids can be surprisingly easy to please.
“Sinfully decadent” – I like that. I’m not really a fan of super-rich yoghurts but I do love Collective Dairy’s passionfruit flavour! Soooo good! I really want to try the lemon. Yum!
I view yoghurts as a topping rather than a stand alone food so rich is fine with me.
A friend’s boy was over once and didn’t want to eat our grown up food. I didn’t mind this, as long as the child ate, but I was surprised when all he wanted was a raw broccoli and a raw cauliflower. He ate quite a lot of each of them too. Very easy to “cook” for.
Now I really want yoghurt! 😉
That’s so cute! Broccoli has always been a favourite of mine but I only had it raw for the first time a few years ago – it’s so good! Especially with dipping sauces. Yum!
As a child I wasn’t keen – except for bananas – but I have grown into a fruitee! I always have a big plate of fruit chopped up for my breakfast – today pear, apple, pineapple and a mandarin. But putting it all into one dish and mixing it is a wonderful idea, and something I hardly ever do. Thanks for the inspiration!
Haha, I’m glad you’ve grown into it as you were seriously missing out! =P
Ooh, jealous – I was so upset that no pineapple in the store was quite ripe as it’s one of my favourites! And you’re most welcome. Hope you enjoy it. =)
