Review: Premier Inn’s Purple Sauce

I’m a bit of a sauce addict. Be it sweet, spicy, fruity, tangy, smoky… I’ll take it! So when hotel chain Premier Inn offered me an opportunity to try out their new, limited edition Purple Sauce, of course I jumped at the chance!

Delivered in a very cute wooden box, I was only temporarily disappointed when it didn’t contain a bottle of wine! Instead, a bottle of fruity sauce was a pretty good gift!

I know I said I was a sauce addict but I have a confession to make…

I hate ketchup.

Always have. Yes, I am fully aware that this fact makes me a bit of an oddball. And as far as ketchup’s competitors go, I am rather apathetic towards brown sauce and I’m super-picky when it comes to barbecue sauce. (Fussy, you say?) However, chuck me something fruity and spicy and I’m sold!

The Purple Sauce – which was developed with chef Ed Baines – smells amazing. Made with a blackberry base and a containing selection of natural ingredients including crushed chillies, toasted cumin, smoked salt and cider vinegar, the sauce is fruity and tangy with a hint of smokiness. There are no artificial colours or flavours, no nasty additives, and it’s suitable for vegans. I would definitely choose this purple sauce over the staple red or brown alternatives any day.Premier Inn Purple Sauce 6

The label says this sauce is “perfect for breakfast” and although it was developed to match Premier Inn’s hearty cooked breakfasts, I found it much more versatile than that. The first meal I tried it with was a Linda McCartney Deep Dish Country Pie. The sauce was a fair bit runnier than I expected so it’s not the prettiest looking meal but the sweet and spicy sauce was the perfect complement to the pie’s rich onion and soya mince filling.

Purple Sauce PieAs the Premier Inn breakfast menu features veggie sausages, I also tried the sauce out with Linda McCartney sausages. (For the record, I don’t live on Linda Mac frozen foods… These meals were purely for “research” purposes!). The sauce was a great fit for a sausage sandwich, especially for a ketchup-hater…Premier Inn Purple Sauce Sausage

The sauce is super-tasty with fried halloumi, which makes a great veggie breakfast or brunch option (hint, hint, Premier Inn) or for a vegan alternative, it works as a delicious marinade for tofu. And I haven’t tried this one yet but I imagine it would also go perfectly with a fried portobello mushroom. Mmm…

The sauce is available for a limited time only so if you want to try it out yourself, book your stay or head over to your nearest Premier Inn for breakfast soon! If it proves popular, perhaps it will stick around!

I still have half a bottle left so I think it’s time to whip out those mushrooms…
